Hello from inside the Vortex. Thanks to everyone who stopped in last Saturday for Carolyn Kleinman’s presentation and signing. We had a nice-sized crowd and she was kind enough to sign our remaining stock of The Class Assignment Is Murder — a thriller set in Lancaster. If you were unable to attend in person, you can grab a signed copy off the shelf this week. And if you live far away from the store, signed copies are also available via our online store. pre-order a signed copy via our online store.
This Friday, April 26th, is our first Free Movie Night, hosted by Wesley Southard. That takes place from 7pm until 9pm. Seating will be limited and is on a first come, first serve basis. Also, the cash register will be closed at 7pm sharp. So we recommend arriving early so you can save a seat and finalize your purchases.
This Saturday, April 27th is Independent Bookstore Day. We’re celebrating all day long with 10% OFF ALL PURCHASES! That’s right. New or used books. New or used comics. Audiobooks. Movies. T-shirts. Roleplaying games. Supplies. Art. Everything in the store. 10% off your total purchase. But only on Saturday!
This Sunday from noon until 4pm is our usual Magic the Gathering meet-up. You get a free card just for playing. The group is growing in size, so we recommend getting here on time to get a seat.
Also coming up in the weeks ahead: Free Comic Book Day, a D&D Character Creation workshop, the monthly Vortex Writer Group meeting, and signings with John Urbancik, Jessica Eppley, Matt Wildasin, and more. Check out the complete list of upcoming events here.
You may remember when — overnight — we turned the comic book side of the store into a vintage video rental store and then turned it all back into a comic book store by morning. I mentioned at the time that it was for a video.
I’m happy to announce that with your help and the help of the community, Dead Format, the next feature-length film by Mike Lombardo (I’m Dreaming of A White Doomsday, The Stall, Suburban Holocaust) will be filmed inside Vortex Books & Comics (as well as other exterior locations) this summer and fall. Check out the video and see what you think!

Rook and Red Coat were killer stories. Interesting to see them ranked so high. Was curious how they were selling in other places
I miss video stores even if working for them was an incredible shitshow! I wish I lived closer, Wesley’s movie night sounds similar to my FantasyCon film strand, without the expense of a weekend con. Wishing you all the best for the event etc.
